How are privacy interests in the workplace of today being threatened? What does the concept of privacy mean? Are employee privacy interests being protected and to what extent do the legitimate business interests of employers outweigh privacy claims? The conclusion reached in this thesis is that the current privacy framework is inadequate to protect the spatial and informational privacy interests of provincially-regulated private sector employees in Canada. Within this general framework, electronic surveillance and workplace privacy is examined.;This thesis canvasses the types, range and use of electronic surveillance in the workplace, the philosophical and conceptual underpinnings of privacy that inform privacy law and the justifications for protecting privacy in the employment context. The application and effectiveness of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act in the employment context is assessed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
