Traffic Management is essential in any network. In this thesis, methods that are widely used in the implementation of the functions of traffic management, namely traffic control, resource management and congestion control for ATM networks have been analyzed. The analysis has been based on achieving the desired quality of service (QoS) and minimizing or eliminating bottlenecks that might occur during traffic flow in a network. In traffic control, the methods that are important in managing traffic have been analyzed. One such important method is the connection admission control method, which is extensively used in traffic control and has been analyzed in detail. Another important aspect of traffic management is resource management. Managing resources such as capacity, topology and bandwidth is vital in ensuring efficient operation of the network, which is necessary to achieve the desired QoS. The procedures for managing these resources have been analyzed on the basis of achieving the desired QoS. An analysis has also been carried out on the methods that are responsible for implementing congestion control. Two important methods that are used to combat congestion are the preventive control method and the credit-based flow control method. These analyses indicate their strengths and weakness. Suggestions have been made to minimize these weaknesses thereby increasing their effectiveness.
