This research involves the synthesis and characterization of novel surfactants. Some of these may be applied to the decontamination of chemical warfare agent simulants and to the remediation of heavy metal ion contaminated water.; The work consists of three themes: (1) Several examples of "shamrock" surfactants have been synthesized. The structure nature of these surfactants is defined in Chapter 3. Their Krafft temperatures and critical aggregation concentrations in water have been measured. The characterization of their derived aggregates in water has involved 1H-NMR, dynamic laser light scattering, optical microscopy and cryo-etch high resolution scanning electron microscopy (cryo-etch HRSEM). (2) The oxidation properties of an aggregated dithiophosphate-based surfactant in water have been investigated. (3) Coordination reactions of surfactants as ligands with Co(III) have been investigated.
