This thesis explores the use of asymmetric graph matching in order to register satellite images to road maps. A road map typically shows a complete road network distinctly. Also, a satellite image shows major roads clearly but small roads may be difficult to discriminate. Then, matching these two types of graph representations may be difficult for existing inexact graph matching algorithms.; Asymmetric graph matching is a technique that performs inexact graph matching between two positional graphs with different resolutions. A positional graph is an attributed graph whose vertices have attributes that indicate the coordinates of an image feature they represent.; Our main goal in this thesis is to present an efficient asymmetric graph matching algorithm that matches positional graphs with different finenesses and unknown scales and orientations. We design a scale, translation, and rotation invariant algorithm for asymmetric graph matching. Given two graphs, our algorithm is able to determine the differences of scale and orientation between these two graphs, while matching the graphs. The system is tested with manually extracted graphs from a digitized road map and a satellite image of Manhattan. The algorithm matches these graphs successfully in most cases.
