Austenitic stainless steel (ASS) has been utilized as a substitute for carbon steel in corrosive environments; however, brittle-type failures were encountered due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).;Potential scans of 316 ASS were performed in an attempt to determine if recently ordered material tested is relatively less susceptible to SCC when compared to materials that were made at an older time. Detail apparatus design, justification of results obtained and recommendations for future experimental work are presented herein.;Chloride SCC is one of the most prevalent forms of SCC in ASS. Component life prediction requires SCC initiation and failure time from published data; however, such data are scarce. In this research, an experimental apparatus was designed and setup for gathering data on the incubation period and the fracture time for 316 ASS immersed in 1% NaCl solution at 80°C. The setup of the apparatus was verified by conducting a standardized test.
