Supreme Court decision making in federal agency cases.

摘要

One of the more consistent findings of judicial research is the extremely high level of success the United States government has enjoyed at the bar of the Supreme Court. This success is greatly exceeds that of not only private individuals and organizations, but businesses and state and local government as well. In this dissertation, I increase our understanding of this area by using a more intricate and comprehensive theoretical model.; Using three categories of explanatory variables; ideology, administrative characteristics and law, and compliance, I estimate a model to determine the factors that impact judicial decision making in the Supreme Court when federal administrative agencies appear before it. While I find support for the pre-eminent role that ideology plays in models of judicial decision making, I also uncover the importance of variables from the latter two categories.
