IETF proposed Mobile IPv6 to address the IP mobility problem in the next generation Internet Protocol IPv6 by which mobile nodes are reachable while roaming in the Internet. Mobile IPv6 is optimized for macro level mobility and produces significant network overhead in terms of handoff latency, packet loss and signaling load when the mobile node performs frequent handoffs. Several intra-domain (micro) mobility protocols were proposed for providing fast and seamless handoff control within a local domain.; The Mobile IPv6 protocol and other micro mobility protocol modules were tested and contributed to the Network Simulator (NS2), a widely used and tested discrete event simulator. The purpose of this research is to extend MobiWan and to implement micro mobility protocols Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) and Mobile IPv6 Regional Registrations (RRMIPv6) on the NS2. A performance evaluation of Mobile IPv6 and its proposed micro mobility solutions i.e. HMIPv6 and RRMIPv6 will also be conducted. This study provides a deeper understanding of the overall performance of various protocols. The results obtained from the simulations showed that within a local domain, the performances of HMIPv6 and RRMIPv6 are much better than that of Mobile IPv6.
