Personality styles of student naval aviators: An analysis of DiSC styles in flight training and attrition rates.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to see if there was a correlation between the personality styles of student naval aviators (SNA's) in flight training and their attrition rates. Eight hundred and forty-seven (847) student naval aviators were included in the study. The SNA's were Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers assigned to Commander, Training Air Wing FIVE at Naval Air Station, Whiting Field in Milton, Florida. The data was collected from the results of the DiSC Classic Personal Profile System 2800 Series and a demographic survey.;Student naval aviators' attrition rates have consistently remained at approximately 12% despite the detailed screening and selection processes for students. The results of this study indicated a positive correlation of personality styles and the rate of attrition from flight training. With looming financial constraints on the horizon, these findings should be considered to keep future training costs to a minimum.
