Information and communication technology (ICT), culture, and power: Toward a 'neo-sociotechnical' theory of organizing.

This project examined organizing process in knowledge-intensive work in which ICT plays an important part. The investigation focused on how cultural processes and power relationship constitute ICT and the relationship between ICT and organizing. A case study was conducted in a high-technology service organization. Ethnographic methods, such as in-depth interviewing and participant observation, were utilized to gather data. Based on the analysis, the study developed a theoretical framework in which culture, ICT, and power integrate and interact to form an organizing process. The analysis has implications for understanding the role of ICT in organizational control, ICT implementation, knowledge-intensive labor process, and organizational culture.
