Students diagnosed with ADHD are at risk for academic failure. They struggle with the completion of homework due to the symptoms associated with ADHD (poor organizational skills, inattentiveness to directions, trouble focusing, etc.). The token economy reinforcement system has been widely used in educational settings to manage and modify behavior. In a token economy system, a student is issued "tokens" for demonstration of the target behavior for which they may exchange at a later time for a reinforcer (i.e., food, no homework pass, extra recess time, etc.). This study tested the effects of a token economy reinforcement system on the completion and accuracy of homework for students in a middle school setting with ADHD. The dependent variables measured were the rate of completion of homework and accuracy of the work completed. The independent variable measured was the installation of the token economy that rewarded students for handing work in on time as well as rewarding bonus tokens for higher accuracy rates. It is believed that a token economy had a positive effect on the completion and accuracy of homework for students with ADHD. The participants improved upon in the areas of homework completion and accuracy during the token economy phase of the study.
