Risk taking in adventure racing.

While a substantial amount of research has examined risk taking in sports (Breivik, 1996; Levenson, 1990; Robinson, 1985; Rossi & Cereatti, 1993; Rudestam & Slanger, 1997; Straub, 1982), very little is known about the complexities of risk taking among adventure racers. The purpose of this study was to extend the research on risk taking in sport by qualitatively examining experiences and perceptions of risk within the sport of adventure racing. Ten elite adventure racers participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews ranging from 1.5 to 3 hours. All interviews were transcribed and analyzed inductively (Jackson, 1996; Schensul, Schensul, & LeCompte, 1999). Raw data themes emerged from the interviews producing subsequent higher order themes and general categories. The themes were discussed in relation to the literature on risk taking. Recommendations for future research and implications were also discussed.
