In this thesis we propose a modern edge switch architecture and networking concept that benefits from incorporation of two prevalent technologies: Optical Burst Switching and Time Division Multiplexing. The objective switch is also equipped with a collision free centralized scheduler to eliminate the need of expensive FDL or prevent the unnecessary waste of optical transport capacity to accommodate signaling delay for burst connection. This Centralized Scheduled Time Sliced Optical Burst Switch (CSTOBS) has 256 x 256 network/access ports, which may receive (IP) packets, (ATM) cells or (SONET) frames from the access networks and aggregate them to the core with a switch throughput of up to 100 Tbps. First the logical architecture of the CSTOBS is designed and data units track through the switch is distinguished, then a simple but effective load balancing and packet scheduler algorithm is proposed that is local to a group of ports. In the next stage this architecture is mapped to a hierarchical modular architecture that lays on the physical role of logical counterparts. Following the research, CSTOBS physical architecture is further projected over some available commercial components with focus on the IntelRTM ) IXP2800 network processor and other Intel optoelectrical components.
