Predictive validity of a one-minute measure of comprehension on a state measure of adequate yearly progress.

Schools that have adopted Voyager Universal Literacy as a research-based reading program for grades Kindergarten through third use the Vital Indicators of Progress retell fluency subtest as a measure of reading comprehension. Limited research exists that show the relationship between retell fluency and comprehension. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which VIP retell fluency subtest have predictive validity of reading comprehension measures on the CRCT of third grade students Archived data from VIP retell fluency and CRCT comprehension for seventy six third grade students, who participated in the Voyager reading program, were collected and analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Analysis of the data revealed a weak correlation between VIP retell fluency and CRCT comprehension. With retell fluency assessments being quick and easy measures for teachers to administer after test of oral reading fluency, practitioners and researchers must continue to explore the significance of retelling as a comprehension measure and best practices for teaching and learning.
