Wind from the shore: Secular spirituality and the journey of William Butler Yeats from Romantic transcendence to monistic Modernism (Ireland).

摘要

This dissertation considers the poetic career of William Butler Yeats from the aspect of the relationship between his spiritual and poetic development. During the course of four decades, Yeats progressed from a romantic poet into a modern poet. Moreover, while his spirituality remained in the occult tradition, he moved from a transcendent view of reality to a monistic view. Structuring my study around the three major phases of poetic output, this essay will trace that twofold development from Romanticism through what may be called a transitional stage to Modernism.
