Connecting the dots: A study of the possibilities and challenges for passenger rail in Dartmouth (Nova Scotia).

The CN rail line that runs through Dartmouth has the potential to connect the two existing ferry terminals, the Burnside Industrial Park, numerous brownfield sites including Shannon Park, and two proposed college campuses. If served by rail transit, this line has the potential to act as a catalyst for brownfield development and to improve transit trip times in Dartmouth. The Regional Plan Goals and Objectives and Downtown Dartmouth Secondary Planning Strategy both support rail transit in this corridor. While a typical high speed, high capacity, suburb to downtown commuter rail service would not succeed in this corridor, a frequently stopping service that offers a direct route to several destinations as well as convenient transfers to other modes could succeed in this corridor and become an integral part of the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) public transit network.
