An annotated bibliographic compilation of selected horn ensemble music that details the characteristics of this repertoire is currently not available. Previous studies are limited in size and scope, and publishers' listings of compositions provide limited information. An up-to-date compilation is an indispensable reference tool for teachers as well as performers.; The horn ensemble developed from ensembles of hunting horns in the late Baroque to valved horn ensembles of the nineteenth century. As much a social phenomenon as a musical one, their repertoire consisted of hunting horn compositions, arrangements of symphonic repertoire, and popular songs. The twentieth century saw the rise of the horn ensemble as a teaching tool at universities and colleges. The repertoire grew rapidly, with new arrangements and original compositions in varying styles.; This extensive annotated bibliography examines selected horn ensemble compositions composed for five or more horns, presenting specifications for each piece in a chart that lists pertinent information: composer, arranger, ensemble size and instrumentation, number of movements, duration, score availability, publisher, level of difficulty, commission and/or dedication, endurance level, transposition, clefs, range, meter changes, mutes, multiple tonguing, unusual notational devices, instrumentation and extended techniques. Also included are objective annotations limited to general style characteristics, form, extended techniques, and particular performance issues. This resource will provide teachers with important information for selecting appropriate horn ensemble compositions for their ensembles.
