The Law of Non -Contradiction in Hegel's dialectic: Hegel's dialectic as a logic of antinomies against the backdrop of Kant's 'Critique of Pure Reason'.

This work examines the Law of Non-Contradiction (also known as the principle of contradiction) in Hegel's dialectic. The principal claim of this work is that the analytic Law of Non-Contradiction, in accordance with the Hegelian concept of aufheben, is preserved in the dialectic as one of its defining components. What will be specifically argued is that Hegel's dialectic is a logic of antinomies in which the Law of Non-Contradiction functions as the dialectical concept of negation. This will be shown against the historical backdrop of Kant's account of the antinomies in the Critique of Pure Reason. Although, to be sure, Hegel's critique of Kant is examined in detail, the principal claim of this work is demonstrated, in part, by also elucidating the positive influences that Kant had on the development of Hegel's thinking with regard to the dialectic. Also of particular interest throughout this work is the manner in which Hegel (and also Kant) handles the distinction between the analytic and the dialectic as well as the Understanding and Reason with the express aim of determining the role of the Law of Non-Contradiction therein. Once this has been sufficiently determined, the consequences of the interpretative stance of this work are explored in the contexts of (1) Hegel's speculative idealism and (2) the problem of hegemony .
