Synthetic winery wastewater was used to conduct efficacy studies of winery wastewater treatment using anaerobic digestion. Biological methane potential (BMP) and anaerobic toxicity assays (ATA) indicated that winery wastewater is a good candidate for anaerobic digestion. Both tannic acid and sulfite, common winery wastewater constituents, were shown to inhibit methane production.;A continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system was applied to investigate the removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phenolics, as well as methane generation. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) values of 2, 4, and 8 days were evaluated. While the 2- and 4-day systems failed, the 8-day HRT (0.675 g/L/d OLR) CSTR system was successful at removing COD (>80% removal), some phenolics, and produced biogas (avg. methane production 0.071 L/L/d).;Actual winery wastewater successfully validated the synthetic results, indicating agreement (R2 = 0.9758).
