Dentistry and Health Information Exchange.

摘要

Health Information Exchange (HIE) is a relatively new area in the field of Health Information Management (HIM). The ability to exchange key clinical and demographic information is vitally important to healthcare providers so that they may properly and safely treat their patients across many platforms of healthcare. The ability for dentists to participate in this exchange of health information is just as important for patient safety as it is for medical providers.;This project focused on discovering the barriers which have prevented dentists from participating in HIE through a survey which was electronically distributed to the members of the Northeastern District Dental Society (NEDDS) which serves the Minnesota counties of Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, Pine, and St. Louis. After discovering the most common barriers, an informational brochure was developed to inform, educate, and interest dentists in HIE. A PowerPoint presentation was also created to provide a more detailed explanation of how HIE works, Meaningful Use incentives, and reasons for participating in HIE.
