In the late 1970s major oil and natural gas discoveries in Southwest Wyoming significantly impacted the city of Evanston. Large numbers of oil field and construction workers moved into the area and transformed Evanston from a quiet small town into a raging boom town. What distinguished Evanston from other boom towns in Wyoming was the lack of a bust that followed the boom. Evanston stopped growing but then entered a period of stability. This study examines the boom from the points of view of citizens who endured the boom years and continue to make their homes in Evanston. Special attention is paid to the problems of school overcrowding and crime which were related to the boom.
