Acoustic source localization is a well researched area in engineering. The ability to capture a sound and determine the position in 3D space that a sound is coming from can be used for both control system applications as well as service applications. This thesis shows that a real time acoustic source localization system can be created on a personal computer (PC) with a general purpose operating system using "off the shelf" hardware.; This thesis will also show that the creation of services and applications that use real time acoustic source positioning information can be created using a mobile agent architecture. Using mobile agents to access an acoustic location resource can allow both services and applications to be created or removed dynamically from the system without any disruption to the acoustic location resource. The applications and services become modules that are added and removed from the acoustic location system dynamically as needed.; Mobile agents in this architecture respond in real-time to perform tasks for entities that require positional data. Entities or applications that use positional data can include services such as automatic camera movement and switching, microphone gain control and switching, audio time stamp collection and management, key word audio search queries, real-time key word command interfaces, and network media delivery among others.
