Mental health counseling site supervisors: An examination of supervisory style and emphasis.

Site supervisors play an important role in training counselors. The purpose of this study is to examine mental health counselor site supervisors' style of supervision and emphasis during supervision. This research examined the relationship between supervisory style and emphasis and both years of counseling and supervisory experience and training in supervision. Site supervisors from CACREP accredited mental health counseling programs were asked to complete the Supervisory Styles Inventory (Friedlander, M. L., & Ward, L. G. (1984). Development and Validation of the Supervisory Styles Inventory. Journal of Counseling Psychology, 31, 541--557.) and Supervisor Emphasis Rating Scale - Revised (Lanning, W. & Freeman, B. (1994). The supervisor emphasis rating form - revised. Counselor Education and Supervision , 33, 294--302.). Multiple regression analyses revealed a significant relationship between the independent variables and one dependent variable. Analyses of variance revealed significant differences in site supervisors' style and emphasis, as measured by subscale scores on the SSI and SERF. Implications regarding site supervisor training are discussed.
