Oxidative stress is reported to contribute in the development of chronic disease, including osteoporosis. In this study, the effects of bioactive compounds on antioxidant levels and bone quality were evaluated. Sixty six-month-old rats were used in this study, of which forty of them were ovariectomized to represent female rat models of osteoporosis and the remaining twenty served as sham-control. The forty rats were then separated in half and were either on control diet or control diet supplemented with bioactive crude extract; the remaining twenty sham-control rats were only fed the control diet. Ovariectomy decreased (P<0.05) antioxidant status, bone strength, and bone density. Dietary supplementation of bioactive mixture significantly increased (P<0.05) antioxidant status and bone quality compared to the OVX group. Bone quality of the supplemental group reached the level of bone quality of the sham group while antioxidant status did not (P>0.05). In conclusion, further research is needed to determine the mode of action of citrus bioactive compound mixture on bone quality.
