This study examined what leadership strategies will facilitate an interest-based, win-win approach to labour relations at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). Perpetual change will continue to be a reality at VCH. The study explored key elements contributing to collaborative union management efforts that have resulted in mutually beneficial outcomes and how more of these positive elements can be instilled into future workplace challenges. Qualitative data was gathered from union and management representatives of VCH through focus groups and one-to-one interviews.;The research confirmed there is a fundamental belief that change is inevitable and through collaborative efforts of union and management, mutually beneficial outcomes can be achieved. Key contributors to an interest-based approach to labour relations included a clear organizational vision and senior leadership support for this alternate approach to labour relations, open and honest communications, emotionally intelligent union and management leaders, and a willingness to consider all perspectives.
