Golf links: Reconnecting golf courses with the coastal dune landscape.

Golf courses have been closely associated with coastal dunes since the origin of the game in Eastern Scotland. However, locating a fixed element such as a golf course within the highly dynamic dune landscape can create conflicts, such as erosion of fixed features. This research sought to identify conflicts between golf courses and dune landscapes, and to develop design guidelines which could help remediate existing issues and avoid future conflicts. The list of issues was developed through case studies conducted on golf courses in a variety of dune landscapes in Northern Ireland and Scotland. This list of issues was then aggregated into general action categories from which design guidelines were developed: Managing People In The Landscape; Re-Establishing Dynamics In The Landscape; and, Considering The Landscape As A Whole. Design guidelines are a practical tool with applications in site selection, as part of the course design process, and for management purposes.
