Cultivating collaborative resource management through a coaching pilot in the BC Public Service's natural resource sector.

This project explored how to enable the practice of coaching during times of transformational change for senior managers within the Omineca Managers Committee (OMC). The BC Public Service's natural resource agencies, through the Resource Management Co-ordination Project (RMCP), are tasked with implementing a coordinated service delivery. This project explored coaching needs and impacts through a six-week coaching pilot with the OMC and coaching practitioners in the Ministry of Forests and Range. Literature on organizational learning, culture, collaboration, and coaching were examined. Through an action research methodology, OMC members and MFR coaching practitioners who participated in the study identified: (a) coaching positively impacts multi-agency collaboration, (b) internal coaching practitioners have significant roles to play in supporting RMCP, (c) coaching is an effective method of learning, (d) enabling coaching is a challenge, and (e) there is an absence of a coaching culture. Recommendations based on the study conclusions are also presented.
