Anticipating first year teaching anxieties and fears: Preparing to become a successful communicator and collaborator as a new special education teacher.

The purpose of this study was to examine the communication and collaboration within early childhood special education during the first year of teaching. Focusing on the interactions between a new educator and families, and a new educator and other professionals, this self-study examined the author's personal anxieties in establishing relationships with these individuals. Data were collected through journals and notes that were gathered in the author's student teaching placements. The data were then analyzed using perspectives from family-professional partnerships. Through this inquiry, it was discovered that the author's greatest concerns in beginning her first year were feeling inexperienced in collaborating with professionals, hesitancy when communicating with families, and self doubt. Additionally, the author was able to generate and employ strategies to lessen these anxieties. This study provided an understanding of how the author was able to comprehend her anxieties and work toward strengthening her practice.
