The temperatures of vaccine vials, packed in an expanded polystyrene container with a specific inner configuration, were recorded at 5 different locations during 24 hours treatments at four temperatures (-30°C, 4°C, 18°C or 27°C) and three orientations (upright, on the side or upside down). The period of time during which the temperature was over or below the temperature limits as well as the cumulative thermal load express in degree-hour units have been used to study the effects of the temperature measurement locations, storage temperature of the pharmaceutical products prior to shipment and the insulated container orientation during shipment. Results showed that there was a significant difference in temperature between measurement locations, temperature regimes and orientations of the package.
