Vitamins A, D3, K1, E are lipophilic compounds and widely used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical formulations for a variety of skin care functions. Effective diffusion of Vitamins A, D 3, K1, E from formulations into the epidermis and possibly into the dermis and subcutaneous layers is important for their functional actions. The purpose of this study were to evaluate the release of Vitamins A, D3, K1, E from gel formulation either alone or in presence of each other and to compare the release of Vitamins A, D3, K1, E from gel formulation and NovaSOL® ADEK-Q10 micelle emulsion. Methods for quantitative evaluation and diffusion studies of the vitamins were established by utilizing developed High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and in vitro Franz diffusion cell system with cellulose membrane. The result showed that the developed HPLC analytical method was successful in evaluating Vitamins A, D3, K1, E alone as well as in the presence of each other. The diffusion studies also showed that the vitamins successfully diffused through the cellulose membrane from gel without any interference observed. The in vitro data obtained from the diffusion studies indicated that the gel formulation with 1%w/v of Vitamin and 0.5%w/v of Klucel® as gelling agent gave better release profile.
