Living with vulvar vestibulitis syndrome: The couple experience.

This study used transcendental phenomenology methods to explore the lived experiences of couples in which the woman has a diagnosis of vulvar vestibulitis syndrome. Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with either couples or individuals. Four essences emerged as central to the experience: in search of..., developing of a personal understanding of vulvar pain, developing strategies for coping with painful intercourse, and feelings of isolation. Clinical implications for marriage and family therapists are discussed.
