Investigating user resistance to information systems (IS) implementation.

This research involved an investigation into user resistance to information systems (IS) implementation. A number of papers on IS implementation have focused on the successes and failures of implementing systems in organizations, while very few have delved into pre-implementation failures. Change of any kind is something that has not been embraced or welcomed and remains so. However, change is the only thing that is permanent in this world. If organizations are to experience success in implementing information system projects, they need to see things differently and provide a better environment that encourages change by addressing user perceptions as to how implementations are handled. The literature suggests various industries doing software implementation experienced deliberate resistance by the end user to changes in systems or the introduction of new technology The majority of the end user resistance experienced happens prior to implementation of a new system This research work dealt with pre-implementation end user resistance with a focus on participants from Nigeria, West Africa. The study identified three major themes that emerged from the interviews. Participant resistance to change would appear to be related to the potential for loss of jobs, costs of switching technology, often resulting in the expenditures of the change impacting promotions and salary increases, and concerns for ease of use with a new technology.
