High jet masstone, accelerated stability, dispersibility, gloss, and DOI are requirements of high-end performance coating applications such as automotive OEM or automotive refinishing. The demand for increased jetness and color stability has heightened with the emergence of new resin technology.{09}For this reason, raw material and dispersion equipment suppliers have looked for ways to improve their products.; This study compared Cabot's new innovative chemically modified high color carbon black pigment versus other commercially available high color carbon blacks for automotive coating. The evaluation found that the new chemically attached carbon black outperformed conventional oxidized carbon black pigments. The new carbon black pigment exhibited faster dispersion, better flowability, outstanding jetness, excellent stability, and higher DOI in both waterborne and solvent based systems. The study found that the surface chemistry of the new innovative carbon black greatly improved dispersibility and stability, especially in water borne system.
