he Gowanus Canal is a 1.8-mile long manmade canal located in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Contamination of the Gowanus Canal is the result of approximately 140 years of historical industrial pollution, discharges from nearby polluted sites, combined sewer overflows and stormwater outfalls, and other discharges into the canal. Pollutants include polycyclic aromatic compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, volatile organics, and heavy metals. Levels of these hazardous compounds exceed acceptable values for human and environmental health.;On March 2, 2010, the Gowanus Canal was listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a Superfund site. In order for a remedial solution to be sustained, contaminant contributions to the canal from the former manufactured gas plant sites, combined sewer overflows, and other pipe outfalls must be controlled prior to, or in conjunction with, the implementation of the remedial action for contaminated sediments. For the upper and middle reach of the canal, it is proposed that all of the soft sediment within the canal would be removed with in situ stabilization in targeted areas of the native sediment, and to use a cap with armor, sand, and isolation layers. For the lower reach of the canal, it is proposed that all of the soft sediment within the canal will be removed and a cap would be placed on top of the native sediment, which consists of a treatment, isolation, and armor layers.
