How can the study of Carnival be used as a catalyst to create a meaningful architecture in Green Bay, St. John's, Antigua?; Carnival celebration in Antigua, inspired by the emancipation of slavery, serves as a unifying force that encompasses the whole country. This thesis seeks to underscore the essence of this social act to create a Community Center in Green Bay.; The Community Center merges aspects of the Carnival and the daily lives of the people of Green Bay. At an urban and macro scale, the very idea of Carnival in and of itself underscores the thesis by highlighting a community that has been marginalized by the current civic authorities. At a micro scale the new Community Center provides a meaningful place for that community.; This thesis emphasizes social gathering and interaction and takes an inclusive position toward community development. It argues for creating a Community Center that embraces its context. The thesis recognizes that dynamism is an essential part of Carnival and that this dynamism can help to address issues of density, scale and materials in the design of a place for the community of Green Bay. The project suggests that architecture is a local and regional response to climate that frames festival, ritual, and community.
