An examination of the metadata captured about artifacts of bookbinding by United States research libraries.

摘要

This work is a content analysis of the metadata captured about artifacts of bookbinding by United States research libraries in their public catalogs. It characterizes the types of information made available to the research community, focusing on physical manifestations, historical and artistic context, and the arrangement of production. The aim of this study is to better understand and inform the metadata generated by research libraries regarding bookbindings, encouraging more nuanced and relevant intellectual access to and categorization of bookbinding artifacts. It includes a description of current guidelines and training for documentation of bookbinding in library settings, an analysis of the data captured from library catalogs compared alongside contemporary research needs determined from a literature review, and general suggestions for enhancements to library practice.
