DOD systems certification and accreditation problems: A qualitative case study.

This qualitative case study interviewed a total of 10 managers with government certification and accreditation (C&A) experience. The study was designed to understand whether project management was important to the C&A process. The results of the study provided four themes and four sub-themes. The themes suggested that project management principles can enhance C&A processes, scheduling is important, scope should be defined from the beginning, and communication needs to flow throughout the project. The four sub-themes suggested breaking down the project into steps, addressing cost management, gaining management support, and providing training as keys to success. The results from this study indicated a need for project management principles to be used in C&A programs. Recommendations included further research on project management and how it can create a better experience for C&A processes, interviewing a larger sample size potentially using a quantitative or mixed method approach, interviewing employees versus managers, as the case in this study, and studying leadership to understand the characteristics that may best work with C&A processes.
