The impact of advanced communications technology on military deployment: A phenomenological exploration.

The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological effects of deployment in the information age. Specifically it explored the psychological impact of the internet, and other multimedia on military personnel who utilized this technology while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Participants in this study were Iraq and/or Afghanistan veterans who used advanced communications technology, such as email, Skype and social media to connect with friends and family at home while deployed. Interviews were conducted with these participants in order to gather phenomenological data about their experience of deploying in a time of unprecedented access to friends and family due to advances in information technology.
