The role of individual goal orientation and supervisory orientation in workplace absenteeism.

This dissertation explored the relationship between workplace absenteeism and goal orientation. Self-efficacy was also examined as a potential mediator of the goal orientation - absenteeism relationship. Lastly, the interaction of goal orientation and supervisory styles was examined as they relate to absenteeism. Two collection techniques were used to assemble the data for this study. Student messengers took surveys to working adults who completed and returned the surveys via mail. The second collection used survey responses from working adult students.; The analysis did not reveal any significant relationships between goal orientation and absenteeism or a mediation effect for self-efficacy. There was also little support for the interaction of goal orientation and supervisory orientation as they related to absenteeism. There was, however, a significant interaction between one particular goal orientation (proving orientation) and one particular supervisory orientation (end-results orientation).
