Harm Reduction Wellness Support Group for Substance Abusers.

This study examined and created a blended theoretical manual featuring Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Self Determination Theory, and Harm Reduction as an intervention to assist substance users in improving their wellness in relation to substance abuse. The literature was reviewed to support these theories as an effective tool in working with individuals struggling with substance abuse. An eight-week Wellness Support group for Substance Abusers program was developed and introduced to five expert judges to evaluate the program design. The treatment model integrated weekly group meetings to educate and explore the useful dynamics of these theories in cultivating personal wellness and as an alternative approach to the abstinence only 12 Steps substance abuse treatment model. In order to determine the plausibility of this approach, a questionnaire consisting of eight Likert scale questions and three-open ended questions was implemented for the expert judges to explore and provide feedback regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the treatment model. The evaluation of treatment model indicated that the Wellness Support Group may be an effective tool in assisting substance abusers reduce harmful behaviors and provide a path toward personal wellness.
