Enterprises can reduce risks associated with e-mail management through advance planning. Fundamental to the success of this effort is an e-mail risk management initiative that includes the development of both an e-mail retention policy and an e-discovery plan. Comprehensive rules must be applied consistently by management and implemented by well-trained end users employing the appropriate technology. The purpose of this study is to understand the extent to which e-mail users who are members of an international records and information management association have been informed by their employers of e-mail risk management issues related to records retention and electronic discovery and believe their organizations are prepared to deal with them.
