Benton Facial Recognition Test performance and associated encoding strategies.

The Benton Facial Recognition Test (BFRT) was developed to assess one's capacity to discriminate and identify unfamiliar faces. Impairments in the processing of facial characteristics have been linked with lesions of the right cerebral hemisphere. Factors influencing performance on the BFRT other than right hemisphere brain damage, such as differences in encoding strategy utilization, have not been evaluated previously. In an attempt to elucidate the potential underlying perceptual mechanisms involved in performance on the BFRT, we assessed the relationship between this measure and other visual tasks hypothesized to encompass featural and/or configural encoding properties. Correlational analyses were conducted to determine if performance on the BFRT was significantly related to measures hypothesized to employ configural or featural encoding strategies. Results indicate that performance on the BFRT was related to performance on the HVOT. Results suggest that BFRT performance is only slightly related to featural encoding tasks.
