The Evaluation of the Effectiveness of a Behaviorally Based Parent Training Program for Parents of Children with Autism.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the 7 week Managing Behavior Parent Training Program (MB-PTP) by determining if completion of the program (1) reduced of behavioral services requested (2) increased parental psycho-social functioning (3) increased parental involvement in child's treatment.;Despite previous research, findings of the current suggested that completion of the MB-PTP does not decrease parent's request for more intensive behavioral services. In addition, there was not a significant relationship between completion of the MB-PTP and a change in parental psychosocial functioning. As such, a parent's request for more intensive services was not statistically related to levels of parental stress, anxiety, depression or the severity of target child's symptomology. It appears that regardless of the level of parent or child's functioning, parents feel that intensive behavioral services are necessary. Future clinical and research implications for parent training programs for parents of children with ASD and related developmental disorders are discussed.
