An analysis of the impact of the Free Spay and Neuter program on the pet overpopulation and the program's cost benefits.

On November 1, 2001, the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Unit established the first and only Free Spay and Neuter program in the nation. This program allows county residents to spay/neuter their pets at no cost to them and is a key solution to reducing pet over population in Miami-Dade County. Irresponsible pet owners and those who have failed to spay or neuter their pets have led to the impoundment or surrendering of more than 32,000 animals annually in the county, of which many are eventually euthanized. Additionally, millions of cats and dogs are killed annually in pounds and shelters throughout the country. Many more die on the street. In addition, community everywhere health issues is also at risk due to the large and ever-growing population of unwanted animals that creates and spread diseases. According to the International City/County Management Association, by offering these services at no cost to residents, the Miami-Dade Animal Services will directly prevent thousands of animals from being born into a life of helplessness, suffering, and destruction. The Animal Services Unit is committed to saving lives and improving quality of life issues for the citizens of Miami-Dade County. This study examined the effectiveness of county's free spay/neuter program and other subsidized spay/neuter programs as well.
