The effects of caffeinated coffee on postprandial metabolism were examined. Ten, healthy males (23 +/- 1 y, 23.9 +/- 0.8 kg/m2) underwent 3 trials in a randomized order approximately 1-week apart. They ingested caffeinated (5mg/kg) coffee (CC), the equivalent volume of decaffeinated coffee (DC) or water (W) with a meal providing 75 g of carbohydrate and 3 h later consumed 75 g of dextrose. After the initial meal, insulin area under curve (AUC) did not differ between the groups, although glucose AUC for CC was greater than W (p 0.05). After dextrose ingestion, AUC for both glucose and insulin was greater (p 0.05) in the CC versus DC and W groups. This suggests that the co-ingestion of CC with one meal results in acute insulin insensitivity during the postprandial phase of a second meal even in the absence of further CC ingestion.
