'Ever and Forever Two of Me': The Paradoxes of Dr. Alice Bunker Stockham.

By the time she was sixty, Dr. Alice Bunker Stockham (1833-1912) had worn many hats: doctor, author, internationally successful businesswoman, globe-spanning traveler. A pioneering former for health education and sexual equality, and the author of several well-known books, Stockham was wealthy, respected and loved throughout the world---but in 1905, she would be convicted on obscenity charges and her works surpressed. The woman who was once one of the most prominent figures in the "New Thought" and sexuality reform movements, is almost completely unknown today, a mere century after her death. This thesis analyzes Stockham's book Koradine Letters in depth to show how Alice Bunker Stockham outwardly devoted most of her life smashing apart old ways in favor of new practices, new ways of thinking and seeing the world. Dwever, this iconoclast still clung fast to many of the old prejudices and foibles of the age she was trying so desperately to reform.
