Growing data rates in mobile communications and an increased demand for data functionality among end users are ushering a profound metamorphosis of mobile devices. Mobile devices are integrating enhanced communications and multimedia capabilities to provide a user with a complete desktop experience in a mobile setting and form factor. These applications, however, demand high data processing rates, power consumption and enhanced digital rights management or data security. It is crucial to create optimal micro-architecture for the cellular processors to provide a capability to execute a plethora of functionalities. Owing to the size and battery power restrictions, it is of paramount importance for the developers to efficiently employ all the resources provided by the embedded processor thereby maximizing performance of the applications.; This work seeks to compare some of the available micro-architectures and the technologies available to optimize applications to achieve higher performance and better power consumption on mobile devices and introduce the incorporation of security features in the next generation of mobile devices.
