摘要

My dissertation is comprised of three papers focusing on the subjects of slack, CEO compensation, and network contingencies. Given the high presence of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in many emerging economies, as well as their persistence even in developed economies, my first paper looks at the effects of slack on economic and social performance in the context of SOEs. My second paper looks at the contingencies that influence the main determinants of CEO compensation: firm size and firm performance. I find that both the level of promarket reforms (marketization) and the presence of a controlling shareholder have a moderating effect on the proposed relationships. My third paper is set in the biotechnology industry in the United States and considers the contingent effects of firms' network position, with a special focus on centrality and structural hole bridging, on the relationship between slack resources and research and development (R&D) intensity. Overall these three papers show under what contingencies slack resources influence firm performance, being critical in the research and development process, as well as the institutional and shareholder contingencies that affect CEO compensation in transition economies.
