The thermal stabilities and thermal decomposition at elevated temperatures for the metal halides zinc chloride, chromium chloride and lead chloride with electropositive metals were studied. The reaction of zinc chloride with Mn is conducted in both Cu and alumina pans. It was postulated that zinc chloride might be reacting with Cu in Cu pan. The reaction between zinc chloride and Mn is also observed. The reactions of chromium chloride and chromium chloride hexahydrate with Zn and Mn are conducted in Cu pans. The obtained TG/DTA plots showed reactions in all the cases. The reactions with chromium chloride hexahydrate are observed at lower temperatures than chromium chloride. The reactions of lead chloride with Sn, Ni, Co, Cd are conducted in Cu pans. None of them showed any reactions on TG/DTA plots.;We were unable to explain the mass loss in the reactions clearly. The DeltaH values at elevated temperatures could not be calculated as the heat capacities for all the compounds and metals were not available. The DeltaH calculations at standard temperatures were done to support the results. This study, as a part of systematic study in our group, might be helpful to know about the reactions of metals occurring during various manufacturing processes.
