High performance human resource practices have been found to increase organizational effectiveness in the business world. The use of various corporate reward systems has been posited to affect organizational culture. Many researchers have suggested employee retention across organizations can be related not only to the use of high performance human resource practices but also to organizational culture. Although high performance human resource practices and culture have been found to negatively influence turnover, this relationship has routinely been studied in the business environment. To better understand the relationship of high performance human resource practices and their affect on staff turnover in institutions of higher education, the current study suggests the need to examine moderating variables in the relationship between culture and turnover. Data collected from human resource professionals working for institutions of higher education demonstrates the moderating influence of culture on the relationship between high performance human resource practices and staff turnover.
