The complementary roles of a calibration program and a quality system.

This thesis compares the relative merits between a calibration program and a quality system. Each approach reduces testing errors and adds unique value to the testing process. A calibration program increases measurement accuracy and a quality system reduces process variability. These complementary roles are essential to produce the best products, reduce risk, and improve productivity. Calibration and quality control programs work together to reduce cost by reducing the number of rejects, and to save lives by increasing operational safety and product quality. Examples from the U.S. Navy and the medical field will illustrate how metrology and quality control can work together to reduce risk. This thesis concludes with a recommendation for all industries and services to apply the principles of both metrology and quality control to ensure the best quality and performance.
